Everyone knows Italy for its art, its landscapes, its sea, its history for being the cradle of the Renaissance and Western thought. Despite the glorious past, today the country seems to be standing still, in crisis. Taking a cue from the journey of the romantics and the historic choral work led by Luigi Ghirri, Ray Banhoff tells about a different country.

The landscape disappears, there is only room for the subjects and their habitat. More than the country, “a people of poets, artists, heroes, saints, of thinkers, scientists, navigators, transmitters "praised on the monument to Eur, Banhoff travels to an Italy that seeks a new definition of itself. The result is an unsettling fresco of eclectics, exiles, avant-gardists, idealists and probable geniuses.

She says about herself:

“I believe in fashion as an art form and as a powerful mean of communication.

I believe that fashion should not be destined to die after six months but should last over time by becoming a spokesperson for ideas, a representation of the time in which it was born.

I believe in designers, photographers and artists who have the courage to stir people up. I don’t talk about the subjects I photograph, but I immortalize their role within the moment I photograph them.

I push them to do actions within a context that was never built but which merges within reality, with great attention and sensibility.

I experiment with new forms of interaction by asking to create real performances.

What I’m looking for is an image that is a window on a dream reality that mixes everyday elements and surreal constructs.

I hate banality and perfection.

I love randomness and error.”

- Marezzo, 2019. Fotografia digitale e stampa fine art su barytha 325gr hanhemuele. 8 pezzi 21x28 cm. (con cornice 24x32 cm) ciascuno. Interpretazione di Valentina Lauducci

“Un ondulamento sovverte

forme confini resi astratti:

Marezzo nasce come cura collettiva.

- Marezzo, 2019. Digital photography and fine art print on barytha 325gr hanhemuele. 8 works 21x28 cm. (con cornice 24x32 cm) each

Interpretation di Valentina Lauducci

“A ripple subverts

shapes borders made abstract:

any force decided already amuses

from the way. Life grows in spurts. "

E. Montale Marezzo Ossi di seppia 1925

Liberation. Recognition. Creativity. Re-Birth.

These themes have been a source of strong connection between me and the woman I have worked with. The intent of each action was to evolve a state of consciousness.

Through this performative session we reflected in each other and this has made the experience a shared work.

The action took place during the full moon, thus following its influence.

The action contains a beginning, a development and a resolution.

The action, totally spontaneous, follows a curved and circular temporal sequence.

Evolution is in fact a spiral.

We are all linked by the same evolutionary motion.

Sharing can be a tool, a resource, a collective heritage.

Marezzo begins as a collective cure.

BETTY BEE

Biografia

Biography

Born in Naples in 1963, where she lives and works, Betty Bee is an artist who hardly allows herself to be labeled. She is an eternal bad girl, absolutely singular and stimulating, she is endowed with an extraordinary expressive delicacy capable of reflecting on the decadence of the representation of the visual arts using heterogeneous means such as photography, performance, video and painting. Over the years he has created an unmistakable stylistic signature, where Art and Life merge continuously, with an ironically narcissistic complacency that characterizes his works, in which he shows an innate predilection for provocation, play, the exhibition of the body and its obsessions. , infatuations, fantasies. The exposed body, told and transformed, is desecrated and then returned to a physical and emotional truth, object of desire and constant representation of her incredible multiplicity.

You have exhibited from 1993 onwards, constantly in Italy and abroad, always enjoying absolute interest and success.

- Gilda, 1995. Video. Formato MP4. Durata 3’50’’

- Incantesimo Lunare, 2004. Video. Formato MP4. Durata 2’40’’

Ciro Delfino

- Gilda, 1995. Video. MP4 format. Length 3’50’’

- Incantesimo Lunare, 2004.  Video. MP4 format. Length 2’40’’

As in Arthur Schnitzler's novel, Betty Bee plays between fiction and reality, dressing the very dear theme of femininity and its corollary of emotions and impulses with a dreamlike atmosphere: love, violence, incommunicability, sensuality, carnality.

Incantesimo lunare is a video from 2004 presented in her personal exhibition at the Castel Nuovo or Maschio Angioino in Naples in which Betty Bee interprets the thousand faces of the feminine. different, the ability to interpret herself to defend herself and build a different life. A work on incommunicability, shot in black and white and silent, as if the artist were a 1920s diva.

Gilda, a video shot in 1995, and presented in the Raucci Santamaria Gallery, is the discovery of a confession of a woman who offers herself to desire (male, female?) But who in a very sensual and almost tribal dance used as a screen manages to protect her soul . The pitcher with which the artist stages his dance is the symbol of that femininity from which everyone has drawn but which no one has been able to fill: it is the existential void of the artist who offers himself in the work without receiving, the self-representation of the person-object. The stylized figures, in elementary forms in strong and contrasting colors, in transparency, therefore represent the paintings / stories of his story of violence and abuse, which the artist narrates here, but at the same time definitively exorcizes, in full awareness of his own I. And like Gilda in the 1946 film of the same name, used by everyone for her beauty, she realizes the final escape to freedom and happiness, Betty works her own catharsis in art, finally emancipating herself from the condition of her victim.

SERENA BIAGINI

Biografia

Biography

Serena Biagini, born in Sassuolo (Italy) in 1983, is a contemporary photographer who uses the language of fine art, both analogue and digital, as a means for interpreting stories related to her own experience.

The elements of nature, such as water, animals and the body, become a sort of staging of ancient emotions ranging from defense, transition, identification and the search for freedom, unconsciously recreating a repeated act of rebirth that from time to time takes new forms and shades.

Nature, bodies, water, self-portraits, become spaces and places of interpretation through which it is easier to talk about emotions that otherwise would not be able to come out.

Therefore, the creative act becomes an attempt to regain possession of the primary needs of a human being, and of denied vulnerability, trying to re-design a desired path, which starts from the womb, and goes through various stages of growth, in the continuous search for one's own identity and position in the world.

- The Nest #1, #6, #23, 2014. Fotografia digitale. Stampa chimica su carta Fuji DPII Lustre. 75x100 cm. ciascuna.

- The Nest #1, #6, #23, 2014. Digital photography. Chemical print on Fuji DPII Luster paper. 75x100 cm. each. 5 + 2 AP series

The Nest is a collection which has gradually revealed its real meaning, helping me to join a personal state of awareness.

In the beginning it was supposed to represent a birth filled with hope, but then it turned into a depiction of that dark side of my life, that's been accompanying me disguising as panic attacks and anxiety for many years so far.

As a matter of fact, the nest should symbolize a cozy place to live in, whereas it turns into a mental and physical trap.

By exarcerbating its protective role, the nest defines an impassable border, clipping the wings to those living in it.

Portraying my alter ego in the nest/trap, I was finally able to shed light on that side of me, which evolved from being unconscious to a visual state.

Every single image defines today all that had been hidden for years.

ELLEREE FLETCHER (BOMBSHELL_BOT)

Biografia

Biography

Elleree Fletcher is a multimedia artist that questions female identity. Using collage, ink, paint, and performance, she explores her own femininity, the process of “becoming a woman,” and how technology is changing the way we present and see ourselves.
Raised in Aspen, CO, the artist grew up surrounded by hyper-femininity and artificial beauty. When Fletcher was nine, her mother went to the hospital for an operation. Fletcher saw her mom bedridden and bandaged around the chest, but neither parent would explain why. It wasn’t until school the next day that a fellow classmate enlightened her, “Ha! Your Mom got a boob job!” Fletcher was shocked to hear the truth, but even from a young age she understood that large breasts were praised in society. This was not the only instance of alteration that Fletcher was exposed to; many women in her hometown made similar choices. Being surrounded by stereotypical femininity and body alteration made a drastic impact on the artist. She has been questioning gender performance ever since.

RITRATTI DI QUARANTENA - How do youfeel?

Biography

40 years old (1980).

Always in love with images.

Silent and mysterious, wrapped in inaccessible beauty, each of his works seems to tell a story. A story that cannot be read accurately nor clearly defined.

He composes his works, dreamy, fairytale and delicate, through a continuous research of formal minimalism. Some works suggest long suspended journeys, others envelop the viewer in a moment of presence and silence in which all around, the rest, the world, becomes secondary.

He believes that a part of him lives in each of his photographs, as a sort of extemporaneous self-portrait, an opportunity of self-analysis.

He chases himself through others.

After graduating at Venice Art Institute, he deepens the study of the image by graduating in Industrial Design at SID in Padua, establishing in the meantime  relationships and collaborations with several photographers.

Thus his artistic path was born,  with deep roots in a personal investigation of Identity. He strongly believes in cultural dissemination, bringing his research  to general public in museums and associations in many Italian cities. In recent years he integrates his work with performative theatre. 12 years of photographic research.

- Autoritratti, 2022. Video. Formato MP4. Durata 2’19’’

- Autoritratti, 2022. Video. MP4 Format. Length 2’19’’

There is a path made up of many other images that I have not chosen, which I have discarded, which I have always considered unsuitable.

And instead, looking at them, I found in them the strength of the path that led me to the chosen one.

I've never shown what's behind one of my photos.

This project reveals it.

For each photo initially chosen, I went to search my archives for all the other scanned photos of the same roll that had never been published.

In the video they move spasmodically, quickly. They leave a trace, up to the final photo on which I place my attention.

All of these discarded photos are taken as-is, with no post-production, soiled with scan lint. As if they were real auditions.

For the first time I reveal what I had hidden even from myself.

The making of Bosi, which starts from a refined photographic processing in order to create real tableau vivants, has always been rich in symbolic-naturalist visions that blend with an in-depth study of the dynamics that make an icon, sometimes erotic to sometimes mystical, the human body. He is a digital painter of extreme elegance and inducer of sensuality who has long reached formulations of great emotional impact. Bosi tells about himself through the dynamics of the body and gesture. Alchemical 'joint' - therefore amalgam - between what is one of the tools that sanctioned the modern (ie photography) and the harmonic architecture of the painting, also characterizing the wisdom of the masters of the past.

BENEDETTA CARI

Biografia

Biography

Born in Rome in 1992. As a child, I fortunately grown up with my grandfather, a man with a sensitive mind that gave me all the love for creation in any form. But photography has become my main expression. In my photographs, people are almost exclusively women and in time I understood that this taste was due to my own need to review, find and represent myself in my photographs.
I’ve got thousand ideas of myself, thousand visions, different interpretations, endless facets of the same stone, as precious as crude: so I try to explain all of these contradictions, that sometimes I can’t combine, through other women in my photographs.

STEFANIA CEREA

Biografia

Stefania Cerea vive e lavora a Milano.

Biography

Stefania Cerea lives and works in Milan. She obtained a Master's degree in Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan, where she is currently a researcher.

She approaches photography in 2013, during a depressive crisis. In that period she begins to take self-portraits with her smartphone. In those self-portraits she makes an effort to smile and realizes that looking at them, even though she knows they are false, she feels more real and more related to the world than she was before. After the end of her depressive crisis, her practice of self-portrait ends.

In 2018 she resumes photographing herself and then starts filming herself, with a smartphone and later with a mirrorless. She does it mostly during her orgasm. Raised in a family hostile to any pleasure, her looking at herself enjoying is a way to overcome the sense of guilt. She publishes photos of her face during orgasm on Facebook, to affirm its beauty, depth and power.

From that moment she begins to create and publish other self-portraits, which revolve around dichotomous themes: internalized conditioning and conquest of freedom, apathy and desire, attachment and emotional autonomy, fragility and power, inertia and change. All her photographs have a personal and autobiographical matrix.

In 2019, tired of all the rules imposed by Facebook and tired of the cersorships suffered several times, she decides to stop the publication of her images, but to continue to photograph. In particular, she begins a path that leads her to investigate the relationship between her identity and the surrounding environment. By her will, nothing produced since then has been made public.

I have always considered photography as a cathartic means, a way of self-exploration but also of self-acceptance. In these shots I play in an evocative and metaphorical sense with my naked body, to expose my soul, to tell my little story. Each shot is an act of love to myself, to my imperfection, to my fragilities which, through artistic creation, sublimate in strength and courage. "Leggera e grave" is me, innocent and unruly, shy and shameless, with my joys and my scars, but also all the women who like me through the difficulties of life have learned to love their skin, women who have strong hands to embrace themselves and safe feet to walk in the world.

- Breathe, 2020. Polaroid 600 scaduta. 6 pezzi 10,7x8,8 cm. ciascuno.

- Breathe, 2020. Polaroid 600 expired. 6 works 10,7x8,8 cm. each.

Photography has unlimited spaces, ways and times.

Polaroid has that kinetic thrill that no other way of photographing has.

Instant memories, dictated by chance, where the error is almost sought, wanted and found in a small cobweb that spreads from a corner and carves the floury image. Randomness is dominant, as is the thrill of waiting in which the film is colored with evanescent and melancholy grainy hues.

The snapshot is rendered raw by its speed and the photographer is thus just a hungry voyeur in search of small vulgarities to be immortalized in sensitive and unique squares.

These world canning is enough to make you fall in love with what you do.

A polaroid. The instant time created by the eyes. A soft mechanical noise, the impressionable that appears in the hands impressed.

A portable darkroom that captures and releases reality in the blink of an eye.

The photograph is immediate. Taken and posed, distorted in colors and unimportant framing.

The image becomes an open and fi nite work of art, with a white frame around it that encloses and exalts, and the photographer has taste, choice and character interposed in automatism.

Alongside manipulations, there are expressions and instincts that only those who know how to look carefully can have. And only the Polaroid can create.

The photographer thus becomes the first user of the image he has taken, and is amazed at the unreal colors and shades, the unselected selective focus, the eaten shots and the gazes that are no longer reproducible. A polaroid. The uniqueness and speed of the action is a photograph that risks being temporally effective, but potentially more emotional than all the others.

"The interest in immortalizing bodies in the transition from adolescence to being a woman is what defined most of my collaborations with models, which is why I thought this would be the perfect person to support me. in this series. "Drawing on and expanding earlier designs with Polaroid material at the same time, Breathe explores the uniqueness of young women's experiences from the journey leading to body acceptance, sexual awakening by offering the viewer a glimpse into the life of those girls who at this moment are reaching awareness of their eroticism.

What motivated me is my determination to shape a new narrative around the concept of eroticism and to dismantle the obsolete gender stereotypes that have plagued their very concept of the female body. Documenting 21st century femininity, stereotypes about how girls should behave, dress and look gradually lose their meaning, leaving room for free self-expression in front of the lens.

La petite mort.

What pornography is really about, ultimately, isn’t sex but death.

(Susan Sontag)

What pornography is really about, ultimately, isn’t sex but death.

(Susan Sontag)

I started for curiosity, documentary curiosity…

I did what millions of people do online every day.

I clicked on the most researched word, “sex”, and started watching amateur porn videos.

As a voyeur, as a spectator in front of my computer monitor, become a stage, I looked through the viewfinder of my camera, operating at the same time my decontextualization from the pornographic language, letting those frames hidden in the temporal flow of pornographic videos expand in their becoming to find death in new, photographic images. I was interested in a vision of enjoyment, but also of the loneliness and fragility of the naked and absent body, isolated and dematerialized by the pixels and distance of a monitor.

"La petite mort", "the little death", is a metaphor in the French language to define that spiritual release,

that state of self-forgetfulness that follows an orgasm; that brief period of melancholy or "transcendence" which occurs following the expulsion of the vital force (scientifically explained through the release of oxytocin during the climax). According to Roland Barthes, la petite mort is that

feeling that should be felt when reading a great work of literature.

Imagine and let yourself be carried away. Because everything starts from there.

Escape to a vaporous and light world and forget what you know. Away from our reality, you are dreaming. The transparency of a body, the coldness of a breath, the softness of a tree, the softness of a rose bush ...

The delicacy of the bodies responds to a penetrating nature, a cold architecture, tamed and humanized by a soft chiaroscuro. You are thinking. In this moment suspended in time where every gesture, every gaze, every vibration of light leaves an impression of peace deep within you.

And you don't want to leave anymore.

MADELEINE FLÉAU

Biografia

Biography

Madeleine Fléau was born in Pavia in 1994, her artistic formation took place between her native region and her adopted land: Lunigiana, located in the north of Tuscany.

Madeleine, through the expressive use of her face, she try to protect the archive of the legends and popular traditions of Lunigiana, while preserving the testimonies in visual memories or concretizing them into objects. Her productions concern the theme of the relationship between human and death, taking inspiration from the aesthetics of expressionist film and from the para-conceptualism, introduced by the American artist Susan Hiller. Her research revolves around the religion, in particular symbols and iconography, with esoteric and occult connotation.

The artist was born as a painter, but later experimented with different media such as video, like black and white short films, of the grotesque genre, with silent cinema influence (Tu veu danser ?, 2020; Le jeune fille violeé, 2020; Osso Caramellato, 2020), creating soundtracks, costumes, and sets with miniature. Photography will often be into the installations; in the first artworks Fléau (2020) or Sepolta Morta (2020), the metallic element will be introduced to support the image, and the whole composition takes on a scenographic aspect by the use of a black velvet fabric on background, which the artist resume in another installation entitled Mors mea, vita tua (2020), in which elements of anthropological study of the Christian religion are synthesized, comparing them with some archaic cults; the decorative component it's organic, in fact the artist will continue her experimentation with locks of hair from the Victorian culture, never changing its original meaning of memory and sentiment.

This research on England in the late nineteenth century will also influence the installation Idole en boîte (2021), in which the theme of spiritism consist in a real investigation machine, starting from a copy of those used by mediums during a seance; here the connection with her land involves in the use of pagan elements, belonging to some local celebrations, such as ritual bonfires, and the mysterious wooden figurines of Vignola hamlet, in Pontremoli.

The entire production is not only for preserved the memory of this place, but instead she wants to use it as a pretext for introspection journey, with fantastic imaginaries of folklore, cinematographic culture and a decadent aesthetic.

- Le fantôme #1, #2, #3, 2022. Fotografia in bianco e nero, stampa su carta fotografica. 20x30 cm. ciascuna + cornice

Black and white photography, print on photographic paper. 20x30 cm. each + frame

The concrete presence of a body does not always coincide with the participation of a conscious mind. The phenomenon of dissociation is the closest thing to a state of death, the subject who has become a ghost is only partially visible, is confused with the surrounding environment, is no longer master of the flesh of which it is composed, and occupies a different place than which he will have no memory of.

The environments, created with plays of light and shadow, refer to a cinematic aesthetic, from the silent film of the early twentieth century to the romance genre Noir, from which the artist draws to extrapolate an atmosphere of restlessness and mystery, accompanied by the static subject wrapped in embroidery and in the geometries created by the chiaroscuro.

The intent of the triptych is to recall the imagination to which the photographs refer to the memory of the viewer, but above all to accompany him on an introspective journey, of investigation of the psyche and dissociative disorder. The images appear as fragmented, full and empty at the same time, taking on what is the main aspect of the condition of psychological evasion, that is a discontinuous narrative derived from the presence, also intermittent, of the subject's conscience, and from the possibility of becoming observer of life, but also the object of one's gaze.

Le fantôme, is a realistic picture of a surreal circumstance, a moment of defensive freezing of memory, the moment in which our mind hides us under a veil to protect us from events or situations that are too painful to be faced, and which therefore come to us. save with the delicacy of a caring mother.

Identity, faced with disturbances of this nature, is not limited to being a social construct, but manifests itself in a concrete need to make the idea of oneself coincide with a physical body and a coherent mind, the alienation that events of this kind arouse in the affected entity they can question the deepest certainties or feed the awareness of this tripartition of the human being, fallible and not completely under one's control.

- MEA CULPA, 2022. Installazione fotografica.

- MEA CULPA, 2022. Photographic installation. 90x100 cm. ca.

The object reproduces in its features an ancient instrument of penance, or rather the scourges used by the members of the Confraternity of the Disciplinati. The main theme is the exaltation of the fetish object in particular in the religious sphere. This fascination was fueled by the studies undertaken at the ethnographic museums in the Lunigiana area; in the work you can see the presence of symbols and amulets of popular culture, such as embroidered coral, or the use of red for propitiatory purposes. The photograph follows a magical narrative, between the tragic and the theatrical fiction, deliberately rendered material by the printing on the cotton fabric of the old doilies recovered from second-hand markets. The small pieces edged with lace contrast with the rawness and rigidity of the bone and the hazelnut wood of which the handle is made. Unlike the authentic version, the instrument, if used, would accompany the gesture in a caress, while retaining its original iconographic weight, in which the artist wanted to symbolically concentrate all the burdensome awareness of one's ego and the elaboration of one's experience.

The use of ethnographic objects supported by anthropological investigations is the common thread of all his artistic production, in particular to satisfy the need for contact with the material and with artisanal production, understood not only as the creation of a product, but as performative act of identification with the popular culture of the past. The museum object represents a specific cultural condition, made up of the identity of peoples who have fought to defend their uniqueness, and in this specific example, even their own cults.

In the installation, religion is a pretext to analyze the feelings that moved entire populations, and that once governed and ordered the cadence of the months, the events of worldly life and superstitions.

The viewer, in front of this work, is invited to abandon all forms of prejudice, to welcome the moving naivety of a by now distant time, in which the Christian sense of guilt served as an educating form for all generations and in different social spheres.

- Legati e legami, 2022. Video. Durata 01’40’’

- Legati e legami, 2022. Video. Length 01’40’’

From a narrative point of view, the video takes up the theme of the magical ritual, in which the bouquet of flowers placed in one of the double visions, acts as a dagida, that is the fetish belonging to popular and folk culture, representing the person to whom it is intended. the rite. This duality is also present in the title, in fact without the addition of accents, the words "linked" and "ties" can hold both as an imperative and as a noun / adjective, suggesting to the viewer a connection not only of a spiritual but also an emotional and concrete.

Identity plays a fundamental role within the story, the protagonist artist confronts a mirror in all its mutations, as if to seek concrete confirmation of a perceived and apparently invisible pain, a cue derived from personality disorders that make labile the image one has of oneself, it is no coincidence that the rope that climbs from the back will tie itself at eye level, preventing one of them from seeing; another reference to the disease is the precise duration of the film of 1:40 minutes, which can be traced back to verse 1.40 of the Gospel according to Mark, in which a leper begs for healing. The formal choice of cut flowers as a transference brings with it more than one concept, in addition to constituting a natural and therefore living element like the human being, the amputation of the roots makes them suspended and distant from their own land, recalling another essential theme for the artist: the origins.

The video contains a quote from an unfinished short film by Maya Deren and Marcel Duchamp entitled “Witch's cradle” from 1943, in which the game of the rope is used that performs a climb on the body of a subject, until it becomes a noose.

JAVIER GALLEGO ESCUTIA

Biografia

Biography

Born of Spanish parents, Javier Gallego Escutia is a London based artist. He graduated in film and Photographic Arts and later went on to study Professional Photography at the London College of Printing. He mainly works in these two mediums but has recently also been experimenting with sound and music, which has added another interesting dimension to his visuals.

His film and video work has been screened at film festivals in Europe, Canada, USA and the UK. His photography has been shown in Moscow, Athens, across southern Spain and various London locations including The National Portrait Gallery. His short film, My Life In Nail Bars (A Plane Crash In A Food Court), was shortlisted for the 2019 SHOWstudio Fashion Film Awards.

Escutia displays a fascination with the tension that exists between the familiar and the foreign. His work has become increasingly more conceptual, relying less on the outside world to give him things to document. Instead he’s expressing a more intimate, inner world, and through technology externalises it for others to see.

Recurring themes are otherness, abstraction, distortion and transformation. There’s a rejection of conventional beauty and a desire to find visual excitement in unexpected places. The inflexibility and revulsion we may have towards ourselves, our bodies, and anything that crosses convention and societal boundaries is a recurrent feature. His intention is to present a different idea or aesthetic:a less obvious aesthetic to challenge and expand our often intolerant ways of seeing.

Escutia’s video images are surreal depictions of the human form that draw you in and challenge you to deconstruct and understand their physical arrangement. They don’t conform to societal norms on gender, beauty, or physique. They exist with a different set of rules: a visual language that sets them apart and invites us to rethink our idea of identity.

“The London-based artist uses photography, film and soundscapes to create distinct visuals, ranging from the surreal to hyper-glamourous subjects. Escutia contorts sardonic notions of 1980s art direction, twisted visions of the human body and photography stained with glamorous pathos. Such distinct visuals reflect his musicality within a context of crescendos, electroclash and twinkling synths that avalanche into familiar feelings, of beauty murmurs really, something whispering about yesterday informing tomorrow… there's a sense of nostalgia rooted in his work used to arm him for the future, as disturbing or as glamorous as he decides to make it”.

IVANA GALLI

Biografia

Nello stesso specchio, alcuni specchi riflettono l’immagine a fuoco, mentre altre sfuocate.
È come sei bambino.

Technically speaking, I have built mirrors specifically with various reflex angles to create different realities of vision, a new space, a new dimension, which at the moment when the person moves the vision changes perspective.
People photographed, not seeing themselves in a “usual” way, begin to look for themselves. In the same mirror, some mirrors reflect the image in focus, while others are blurred.
This to me/us even more the feeling of open dimensions.
It’s like when you were a child. Is what kind of baby you are.
A journey through time, the time that passes by, touch you, seems to lift your hair with its unstoppable go, and, meanwhile, you are there still watching, inside a cocoon-like environment and live the daily life, the rituals, the masses, the reality that becomes fiction and theater, while you, standing in that blurry world, now you can finally see.
And see.
See a world where you would like to be.
It seems like wAlice’s journey to her wonderland.
Unreal dimensions, culverts where you falls in an undefinited time, disjointed questions, no answers in moon silences.
Maybe the fantasy of a madman, writer or inventor of fairy tales, can start from what actually lives, but he has the strength to stop and look at the realities that inhabit it. Mirrors.
Mirrors that usually reflect what is happening, but while in the silence of an autumn morning, I looked up in the mirrors of my home and saw myself dismantled, I looked at myself and I saw another me.
I stopped, my eyes had ceased to see, now I began to seek me, looking at me, like when I was a child.
And then, just like a baby I started to play, sewing the pieces of mirrors over other mir- rors like an echo that amplifies the word.
It’s great to get lost in a mirror and make it your trip over time.

LAURA GRECO

Biografia

Biography

Since I was a child I have had a passion for images. I enjoyed cutting out photographs that ended up on my diary and on the walls of my room. Not being fond of words, it was my personal way of communicating.

By photographing myself I began to get to know my anxieties, normal growth that belongs to a human being neither special nor different, I simply found my way to face my fears, uncertainties, wounds through photography.

Maturing through image and I continue to do so by choosing photography as a personal diary, I entrust everything I have to say to her.

Movement, long and multi exposures, black and white are the tools I use the most, while only recently have I pushed myself into manipulation.

A woman speaks. Though her tone is mechanical, her words express a deeper soulfulness; the voice of post-human consciousness. The voice illuminates a journey transcending our understanding of where and when. We are ferried through the collective soul as our guide extracts memories of evolution, education, and hyper-connectivity. She is omniscient. We observe the minutiae of seemingly otherworldly chemical reactions through a micro lens as we explore the metaphorical stream of technological singularity.

ANGELA INTINI

Biografia

Biography

She was born in Noci on 14/10/1992, where she currently lives. Graduated with honors in Cultural Heritage Sciences with a historical-artistic focus and enrolled in the two-year course of Painting and New Trends at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, she has always shown interest in photography and printing processes. Recently her passion, thanks to the considerable interest found by the general public for her work, has turned into a profession, which Angelica carries out scrupulously thanks to continuous and constant research.

Almost exclusively in black and white, Intini's photography deals with issues related to the body, its transformation and revealing what, out of modesty and social convention, is commonly hidden.

In the still short artistic career, Intini already boasts collaborations with visual artists of undisputed success and exhibitions of national importance.

Through collective and archetyp al memories, vague and nuanced, remote and contemporary, Angelica Intini's manipulated chrono photography speaks for everyone through her body, her neuroses, her process of recognition.

- Autoritratto, dalla serie No Name, 2018/2019. Fotografia digitale ad esposizione lunga, stampa su carta fotografica applicata su forex. 4 pezzi 30x30 cm, 1 pezzi 50x30 cm. ciascuno

- Autoritratto, dalla serie No Name, 2018/2019. Long exposure digital photography, print on photographic paper apply on forex. 4 works 30x30 cm, 1 work 50x30 cm. each

In 2017 Intini starts his "NO NAME" self-portrait project. The notion of "name" is associated with that of "identification, specification". With the self-portraits of him Intini, starting from significant personal experiences, wants to investigate several parts of his identity that are difficult to identify and, therefore, to name. In fact, his self-portraits are heterogeneous: they range from color to black and white. The photographs are very often post produced and manipulated by the author to narrate feelings or emotions of a precise moment. The use of her body is performative and instrumental. Intini draws himself into her study-room, working on the lights, objects, backgrounds, very often deliberately aseptic, to highlight the movements of her body. In many of her self-portraits of her she uses long exposure, moved by the need to double herself, to impress, at the same instant, several of herself at the same time. This choice is important and linked to an autobiographical fact of her: the artist has a homozygous twin and has always been used to looking at a double self as she grows up.

Her photography is linked to a process of emancipation of the body and of her recognition.

Intini, through “NO NAME”, speaks of herself and, speaking of herself, she speaks of an “we”.

My collection is called Unknown Connections, inspired by the concept of synchronicity. The images I captured are in fact the result of epiphanies, synchronicities that may appear causal on the outside but which have deeply personal connections, linked to experiences, dreams and memories, fragments of my inner world.

They are deliberately small slides collected with a trivial and everyday tool like the phone camera, with a format that is somewhat reminiscent of the social diaries that we all have now, a secret diary open to the public and its interpretations.

ANNE LOCQUEN

Biografia

Biography

Engineer by training, I live and work in La Rochelle, France. I am a member of the FemmesPHOTOgraphes collective and my medium is the polaroid.
I concentrate my work around the intimacy, photographing those close to me, myself with the intention of making the viewer want to find  and explore connections with is own existence inviting him to reflection and introspection.
I practice self-portraiture, a work on identity. I'm constructing several series of selfportraits. Our inner world of emotions, feelings, sensations, thought is so vast that it remains partly invisible to the other. Its expression, its representation makes it possible to build the links to others and makes possible the discovery and the knowledge of oneself.
Fascinated by mirrors that have powers that go beyond simple reflective properties, some of these self-portraits are "reflected" and show a body erased, unstructured, deconstructed, another image of oneself. These “mise en abîme” are a quest for the invisible in who we are.
I'm also working with plants, creating series of portraits and selfportraits. Modern man shapes his environment, asserts his power over nature. He uses the plant to feed itself, as  raw material, to heal itself... Through my images, I imagine a different link than these, a more physical relationship, a form of embrace where the body abandons itself and binds to the plant until it melts into it. A reflection on how the nature that surrounds us and evolves shapes our interior landscapes and beyond, our identities.

The railway station is by definition a limbo, a non place rich in individuals, who touch lightly each other without ever entering into a relationship.

From the privileged observatory of a railway platform, it is possible to observe the spectacle of a humanity in perennial and frenetic movement, guided by the desire to consume and the need to ensure daily survival.

The ‘Urban Dystopia’ project takes on the task of representing a drifting contemporary society, which leads the children to personal annihilation and social alienation, in a photographic journey in which the only point of contact, among the varied multitude of individuals who flock to the platforms, consists of the train.

The latter is, in fact, a material and symbolic vector, an indispensable tool for the functioning of the capitalist mincer that whirling people, as pawns, on the chessboard of life; we don’t know, we cannot know where they are going, nor what is the reason that push to move… we can only

witness their frenetic race, in a dimension focused solely on the present and consumed by pure individualism.

Symmetry is also the protagonist of this project: the lines, the vanishing points, the lights and shadows defined by the tracks, the railway stations, the buildings that generate multiple, changing and sometimes repetitive figures, seem to express a sense of exasperation, towards a movement that confuses and overwhelms.

Each photographic frame wants to be a container of this dystopian space, generated by the juxtaposition of fast moving figures within places also synonymous with speed, but which are still when they are crossed by those eternal travelers, called humanity.

- Out of Focus (autoscatto), 2020. Fotografia digitale, stampa fine art su carta cotone. 6 pezzi 20x30 cm. ciascuno

Nata a settembre. Mi sto appassionando all’autoritratto.

- Out of Focus (self-portrait), 2020. Digital photography, fine art print on cotton paper. 6 pieces 20x30 cm. each

I’ve always taken photos. It was a way to bring home memories, to capture moments to remember later. Everyone comes up against obstacles in life, obstacles which, if we can embrace them in the right way, can help us to reassess things from another point of view, to create some space. Photography is also fun for me, I pick up the camera and go out, I walk around, in this urban surroundings, and try to capture the situations that are hidden behind a simple gaze.

My self-portraits come from the need to see myself reflected in an image as if in a mirror. I rarely plan them, but rather they come from an impulse that can be sad, joyful or ironic. In this way I’ve grown closer to myself and to the possibility of story-telling through images. The idea that I can capture in a photography an emotion that was struggling to break free and to make it perceptible to the observer has given me great strength. I’ve grown to accept the changes in my feeling and in my body, without compromise or shame, but placing myself in a clear context. These images emerged out of a house which had become bare of another presence and with all their technical imperfections they demonstrate the need to give new life to empty spaces. With this work it is as if I wanted to take myself by surprise and record myself at every moment in one continuous, fluid and spontaneous movement. They were dark days, but in those February the light in the room gave me energy and calm.

LUCA MATARAZZO

Biografia

Luca Mata, aka Luca Matarazzo is a literary character and as such he felt the need to narratively express his expressive forms. He was born in 1982, under the sign of the World Cup

football were won, when the games were listened to on the radio, the cartoons on TV were the Japanese ones and the American toys, the TV was that of Mediaset, and my favorite food was Burghy's burgers and Mulino Bianco's Soldini, so the my first imagery that today greatly influences all my work.

Strategy is the path of paradox, as Sun Tsu says, and Luca Mata writes his art of artistic warfare, in a pure and personal way. He lives in the continuous search for balance, he has a hagakure within himself that pushed him beyond mere photography and led him to cut out, imprint, sew and print the chaotic world of his imagination that, like a daydream, mixes with the real. An imaginative fold that develops over five colors, five ideas, five

suggestions ordered and at the same time chaotic. A fight, a battle that smells of tobacco and emotional residues, Luca Mata like Miyamoto Musashi who writes his diary, notes it, perfects it and binds his "five rings" together. The colors chosen are those of his imaginary of him, those that most attract him. His struggle is a calm storm that breaks on the pages of his notebooks, between impulses, passions, memories of a violent past and a present that explodes in its instant, collected from a photo, embodied in the glue and in the page of a memory, tied together with stitches. Demons and goddesses, loves and fucks, the poetry of violence.

Luca Mata's montage in his notebooks is a mix of photos, colors, markers, stories and aesthetic bites. A mix of other media capable of combining incompatible elements to tell that the artist has hidden between

the leaves of the jungle inside him, made up of people he met and pieces of the world he observed. A school diary marked by life, a set of sheets and notes not to be forgotten, a playlist that plays only five powerful songs, a gesture that has not been done, but that could have been something. Images and words, tales and fragments as sharp as pieces of glass, the glass of a mirror that continues to reflect the artist's image even when he is shattered.

In 2012 the erotic project called Eromata was born, a collection, to date, of 7000 snapshots often identified as a personal "collection of stickers" for adults. This work is constantly growing, and is often a source of material for other experiments that have led to the creation of these "homework" stories of an adolescent legacy that recalls school days, summer holidays, the first afternoons spent discovering naked bodies, derailing on their perversions and their immature, unconscious and tragically reckless pornography.

DOMENICA MELILLO

Biografia

Biography

My name is Domenica Melillo, I was born in Avellino on June 8, 1987. I have a degree in New Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and I work as a visual content creator in Milan.

My artistic research is centered on identity, aesthetics, relationship and dialogue that I mainly express through self-portraits in which I cannot show myself, rejecting the conventions of superficially explicit representation of the post-digital era. I let myself be inspired by everyday life, by the paintings of magical realism and by ancestral and philosophical currents.

I have participated in some national and international exhibitions, including Art for Refugees and Art for Kika (Cloud Gallery, 2016 and 2017) and THE WRONG BIENNALE (2018), and I have created installations and performances at music and subculture festivals, with multi-technical collaborations which also involved La Repubblica and the Federico II University of Naples.

- Safety mask (temporaneo), 2020. Video 9:16 mp4/mov. Durata 0’19’’

- Safety mask (temporaneo), 2020. Video 9:16 mp4/mov. Lenght 0’19’’

The lockdown that I experienced in Milan brought a multitude of dichotomous impulses in me. If hiding has always been a way to protect oneself from the vulnerability inherent in self-manifestation, a protection not contemplated in a world in constant display, now hiding and isolating oneself become civic duties.

In the extreme solitude that I lived, with an outside world in turmoil, I had to learn to manage the most difficult coexistence: the one with myself.

I found the anxious news and the interminable chatter of hyperconnection unbearable, with a neighbor who polluted my isolation, which had become an appreciated solitude. And so the mask really became a way to protect me, to stop looking at the impersonal neighbor, finding instead a sincere love for me, strongly feeling my transience and the collective one in a growing awareness.

CRISTINA MIRANDOLA

Biografia

Biography

I returned to my home town, Bologna, after a long absence that took me first to Florence, where I specialised at the international school of graphic art, Il Bisonte. During those years I dedicated myself to my love of engraving, which had been born at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Later I moved to Turin and then to Biella, the city where I lived for many years in the multifaceted forge of Cittadellarte, the Foundation created by Michelangelo Pistoletto. Always fascinated by glass containers and the plant world, in 2016 I published for logos editions Vivarium. Archivio dei messaggi indecifrati (Archive of undeciphered messages), where fifteen still lifes collect the clues of an exercise in magic.

- Pegni d'amore, dittico, archivio dei messaggi indecifrati, 2012. Video performance. Durata 5’25”

- Diptych love tokens - archive of undeciphered messages, 2012. Video performance. Lenght 5’25”

Archive of undeciphered messages is the container that houses my research.  Collecting, preserving, defining, "archiving" with the awareness of always feeling the presence of the inexplicable part, of what is most precious, alive and sacred: the unarchivable, the indefinable. Essence, to which one can only strive without ever being able to grasp it. "An undefined, an implicit that cannot be made explicit. There is the divine, of whatever origin". (Calasso)
The Pledges of Love are part of this archive.

Pledges of Love, the trousseau

These are portraits of the struggle and the dance, of the acquisition of the trousseau as initiation. The corset, the petticoat and the girdle become the inherited feminine that takes the form of a monstrous mask, a constriction worn and transformed. The dance and the struggle necessary to strip it off, to free oneself from it, create the precious images, the small funereal, ironic, sensual and painful icons of the feminine, served on "silver plates", which are at the same time marked and worn mirrors, in which to find a part of oneself.

Pegni d'amore, diptych
The petticoat of the maternal trousseau is worn. The mask becomes dense and leaves no room for sight.

This is the moment of blind mending, of time and loss.

Sami Oliver Nakari's work ranges from fine art to fashion photography, in a continuous inspiration dictated by the places where he lives. In recent years, the metropolis has been the most fertile envelope of his work, including editorial works and the fashion shows backstage. Commercial works have come closer and closer to an intimate and personal photography, underlining Sami’s main characteristic, that is to tell stories.

From 2014 to 2016, the photographer ValentinaNeri worked on Toilet Club Milano, a club where a group of drag queens created a party out of nowhere and entered into the map as one of the most important in the Milan’s gay clubbing scenes. After portraying characters’ growth and the colorful atmosphere, she continues her project working on the output.

In 2018 the book of the project has been published. Her research drove her illustrating the queer world while experimenting with different languages. Photographs, descriptions, titles, illustrations, presentations and quotes, talks about a group of people in a free way while giving readers possible different interpretations.

The main inspiration for the book is “ScenaIllustrata”, an influential Italian monthly publication born in 1884, which focused on current events with an ironic and direct style. Valentina reinterpreted and took cues from a 1941’s copy, with its fascist layout and language, to talk about drag queens in 2018.

Just be who you want to be.

YO-YO is a series of portraits on the theme of identity and the need of everyone to experience their gender through the body and work on it, their life choices, made visible also through the way in which they represent themselves. towards others, the outside world, not always conciliatory with one's desire for happiness and freedom.

From 1 to 8 December 2021, through an open call on social networks, I asked people who live in my city and its surroundings to come and be photographed in the studio set up at the Creo Gallery by Angelo Pantaleo, curator of the exhibition of the project. Together he and I are activists for civil and social rights of the oppressed categories, in particular with regard to migrants and the identity of the lgbtquia + sphere (and in fact in the complete series there are also our portraits as part of the phenomenon), in a territory not simple, to put it mildly, the north of Puglia, the city of Foggia, with its vast province, with its vast malaise, gripped by educational and cultural poverty and by the proliferation of the mafia phenomenon.

In this city I work as an artist and trainer in the field of photography.

The response given by the locals was interesting, who chose to be portrayed as they are and want to be, with the keen desire to expose and show their truth to the public, happy to be recognized as living beings who make every gesture. and they are art.

The series took the name YO-YO because each one, with his ego, which can change shape, position, swing, go and return, can be free to play with it, breaking the rules of dualism, of schematism in the differentiation of imposed roles, of 'heteronormativity that places the human being at the service of the management of bodies by power, always constricting, violent, abusive, repressive to the point of making you think you are a programming error compared to a no longer well-identified normality, mental cage almost completely lost following the advent of the pandemic.

YO-YO is a series that, with a clean, bright style, with a basic white background that is the same for everyone, tries to normalize diversity, enhancing it. What comes out of each portrait is exclusively the soul of each one acting in the phenomenal world through the body given, used, abused, modified, reprogrammed, hacked, based exclusively on one's will connected to inner feeling. Just be who you want to be.

LAURA PETRA SIMONE

Biografia

Biography

My name is Laura Petra Simone, I was born in Grottaglie on March 2nd 1997. In 2016 I got my degree in Violin at the Conservatory“Giovanni Paisiello” in Taranto. The education I received had a strong impact on the images I create with my actual work. It all started with self-portrait, using a Huawei P8 Lite smartphone, within the walls of my apartment in Milan, during the Covid 19 Pandemic.
The aim of my photos is to represent, through the adoption of common use objects,an image of the „ego“,for which we constantly search and that is often changing, according to the historical period we live in. Sometimes even the use ofthe objects itself can take on specifical identity forms, invalidating the idea of what we usually define as “useful”.
The choice of covered face and of represented body parts is not accidental:  I wanted to express interiority by showing belly and chest in multiform and subjective way, so that everyone can give to not showed face expressions the most reflecting definition for his/herself, thus distorting and expanding, once again, the idea that everyone has of his/her own “ego”.

MARCO PIETRACUPA

Biografia

Biography

Marco Pietracupa (Bressanone, Alto Adige, lives and works in Milan, Paris and the world) is a well-known fashion photographer, who started with an Agfamatic tele pocket 2008 received as a gift as a boy. In the 90s, after attending the Italian Institute of Photography, he established himself on the Milanese fashion scene, which was not easy in those days "for a heterosexual, not rich" and worked for magazines such as L'Officiel, L'Uomo Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, D di Repubblica, Rolling Stone, VICE and brands such as Gucci, Bulgari, MSGM, Valextra and many others. Even then his approach was personal, in “Pietracupa style” - he was among the first to introduce in Italy the new language that was establishing itself in those years, in which fashion and the way of describing it, even photographically, was changing. The idealization of the top models of the 80s had given way to beauties with sick charm, portrayed in intimate situations, private in images with a realistic and unstructured cut, which began to become cool, glamorous.

At the same time Pietracupa has developed his own personal artistic path.

- Io e Lui, 2021. Stampa su carta fotografica fine art. 120x176 cm.

- Io e Lui, 2021. Print on fine art photographic paper. 120x176 cm.

The work that I exhibit concerns an intimate and profound reading of a personal situation that I experienced: the death of my father.

I chose this image to respond to the theme of the exhibition: OTHER IDENTITY.

I really waited until I was the same age as when he died to take this photograph. Photography also has a cathartic power. I wanted to close a circle.

It was the right time to stop and immortalize the emotions of all these years in photography. I gave myself the identity of my father.

I chose to wear the elements that for me characterized him the most: his uniform, his glasses, his hairstyle.

They are the most characterizing elements, but also the least intimate, around which I then built the enveloping experience of the union between death, love and pain.

My mother and my sister who wrap this figure show the pain we felt, the emptiness offered by my mother's naked body, the leaning posture of my sister, the clothes of a father, of which only the shape of the uniform remains, I that I took his place among them. Nothing is left to chance: the place I have chosen is right in the bedroom, where he has gone. The shot was taken by my son, who was the same age I was when the incident happened.

In this photo we find the elements that characterize my photographic research: the use of light, direct, overexposed, artificial; the nude to represent the essence and purity of the person, the dress to tell the contrast between fiction and truth. Clothes can give you character, but the essence is elsewhere.

MARCO RÈA

Biografia

His art pieces are made with spray cans and they are the result of the reinterpretation of already existing images; billboards are careful altered until they only just resemble their original form, showing like that of a secret soul, dark and melancholic.

Marco Rea’s art express an emotional personality, in constant excitement, always aiming to seek its perfection. Faces are loosing the shape of reality and they materialize into the void. Just like under hypnosis, they will catch your attention and will transmit a vague sense of anxiety. His artistic production introduces a new original and unmistakable style. It’s a unique piece in the contemporary Italian art.

IDA MARINELLA RIGO

Biografia

Born in Savona, class of '72, I moved to Milan in 2002 for work.

Although I have an education in sciences, I’ve always loved all forms of art, from music and painting to writing and cinematography.

Art has always been a need, a necessity for me.

In 2014, various vicissitudesled me to have to change job and lifestyle, to reinvent myself.

It was a traumatic change; I felt the need to exorcise feelings such a sanger, fear, instability, restlessness.

In 2016, I started to "cure" myself with photography: through images I tried to give voice to my silent screams.

Photography for me is not static but movement, mutability, it is the indefinite within the finite, it is a malleable tool aimed at showing "my" truth.

Through the use of reflections, blurring, double exposures and the photographic diptych, I have tried to recount my emotions and recognize myself in them.

- m e t a m o r p h o s i s #1, #2, #3, 2019. Stampa fine art su carta baritata. 50x70 cm. ciascuna

- m e t a m o r p h o s i s #1, #2, #3, 2019. Fine art print on baryta paper. 50x70 cm. each

The project "m e t a m o r p h o s i s" develops in 2019 on the basis of my special relationship with portraiture and the photographic diptych: inspired by Greek mythology and its famous metamorphoses with multiple symbolic meanings, it has accompanied my personal transitions.

With "m e t a m o r o h o s i s", I wanted to represent a dialogue between elements that are unrelated in terms of appearance and emotional impact.

I did this through projections of attraction and the repulsion of concept and gender: woman and insect.

There is an analogy between these 'elements'; the metamorphosis of insects and the changes in a woman's body are parallel transformations that I represented by merging them into creatures that could reflect my own change.

I have always avoided "physically" exhibiting my works, I did not feel ready for an external confrontation, to reveal myself, I had yet to find a centre of gravity that would reconcile the thousands versions of myself.

Photography as therapy.

In 2019 I made the cover of the book "Dimmi di te" (Tell me about yourself) by Stefano Maesani edizioni GWMAX, an experience that led me to understand that I was "right" like this; I understood that we are all in a continuous metamorphosis.

V.SILENTE/VALENTINA RINALDI

Biografia

Biography

v.silente is a restless soul who tries to find meaning through words. She writes for necessity and for work.

She approaches photography looking for visual suggestions to emphasize her stories. In 2015 she started a progressive series of self-portraits in which presence and absence chase each other - like secret stories to be discovered. A peculiar unveiling through which she experiences catharsis on the surface. The possibility of slipping into a very personal abyss, sinking into it, playing with it and finally re-emerge, bringing with herself something new. More and more, every time.

An intimate and personal research in which emotions, fragility and restlessness are connected to a creative act that fulfills the fragmented image of her own identity.

The collaboration with other photographers allows her to develop a narrative path through images that is no longer just subjective and personal, but is amplified, revealing itself to be a deep moment of recognition. Even in the eyes of others.

In the beginning was the verb. conditional. possible, but unlikely. written - black on white - to define a sense of unfinished that took shape through words, dreamlike and surreal suggestions deliberately brought to the limit, a suspension of judgment that becomes a mindset and pushes elsewhere.

A space in which to move slowly, in a whisper. for a moment leave the words behind and run the skin like a scene to be composed, an image that seems different from itself. where the light illuminates and the shadow persists. investigate. indulges. the point where the opening is. on gestures. the details. the folds of the skin that become wounds, cracks and slits from which to observe, spy on, weave the plots of a story that repeats itself but is never the same.

Or to the penalty.

Visual fragments that move through a minimalist and repetitive flow that is perceived as physical. dense. occasionally obscure. a suggestion, more than a description, to be placed in a wider and more secret space. the already and not yet. too much and never enough.

This re-veiling is an intimate gesture that has been repeated over time, since time. compulsive, not premeditated. never exhaustive. a kind of cathartic ritual of knowledge and acceptance. an attempt to get closer to the essence in a stronger, more unequivocal, decisive way.

Yet, it is precisely in the attempt to discover oneself that the silent gaze reveals a certain, paradoxical intention. solemn and reserved at the same time. so the images are epiphanies, only in appearance, measured and prudent concessions that push aside the veil with a light movement that alternates presences and absences, false opposites with which to flirt.

MANUEL SCRIMA

Biografia

Con lui realizza diversi progetti a cavallo tra Arte, Comunicazione e Moda, (i.e. Made in China, She’s Not A Man).

Biography

Manuel Scrima is an Italian-Belgium photographer, director and artist who’s work resides on several continents. It is always visible in his artwork a sense of classic and neoclassical inspiration often derived from distant and exotic cultures.

The year of 2006 marks a corner stone in his career: his engagement with the majestic primordial nature rooted at the heart of African culture (Africa Awakens is his most renowned and successful exhibition to date, hitting both galleries and museums in France, England, Ireland, Finland, Italy and Kenya). In particular, in July 2009 he exhibits at the Ramoma, Nairobi Museum of Modern Art.In 2010 UNESCO appointed him as the solo artist to exhibit and celebrate the culture of Kenya. Some of his most representative pictures are exhibited at Art Basel in Miami.

In those years, he returns to Milan and decides to engage with a new world: commercial photography and fashion. He begins to shoot for many brands including: Levi's, Iceberg, Gucci, Les Hommes, Yamamay, Carlo Pignatelli, Dockers, Romeo Gigli, Silvian Heach, Lancetti, IKEA, Malloni.

In 2010, he begins his adventure and collaboration between Asia and Europe with the artist and designer Angelo Cruciani. With him he establishes several projects converging between Art, communication and Fashion (i.e. Made in China, She’s Not A Man).

In 2012 his AfreakA exhibition, curated by Alessandro Turci, is part of the Italian Photo Festival.
He takes also the images of the recent performances and flash mobs about love promoted by Angelo Cruciani (2014-2020) and several photographic works-painted exhibited in LOVVISM (2015).

In 2020, after 8 years of work, he opens his new exhibition Disembody, curated by Chiara Canali and hosted by Fabbrica Eos gallery in Milan. Starting from the classic nude, Scrima manages to disembody it, to make it almost abstract, to transform it into something other than itself. He manages to reconstruct the geometry of nature starting from the human body.

In 2021 he is planningProsopon 2030: the official exhibition for the 50th Giffoni Film Festival. The artist meets 2030 children of the Z generation and talks to them about the future and sustainability.

Works from the "SEBASTIAN'S" exhibition, set up in August 2021 in Palazzolo Acreide - Sicily - in a double solo show with Corrado Levi.

Photographer Manuel Scrima reinterprets the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, perfecting the technique already experimented in the previous "Disembody" exhibition and merges Christian iconography and classical statuary in a single experience.

The artist's research fits into that groove halfway between the representation of the body and abstraction from it. His initial approach is close to the tradition of ancient sculpture which pursued an ideal of aesthetic beauty expressed by the harmony of the body in its proportions; this is why Scrima, which has been operating in the fashion industry for some time, starts from anatomical observation to select the models and their poses. However, the aesthetic perfection that emerges from the individual shots is in reality only the starting point for a reflection on the body as a form and for the exploration of the relationship between image and surrounding space, between full and empty, figure and background. The very original photographic technique used contributes to accentuate the physical inconsistency of the bodies: the models lay behind sheets and gauze that shield the details and outline the profiles, allowing a dialogue between lights and shadows and highlighting strong chiaroscuro effects. The final images are the result of a long pre-production work. Which means that - in veiled controversy against the dominant trend - subsequent post-production interventions are avoided.

In particular these four works propose a virile, young and statuesque Saint Sebastian; an earthly and secular image, which is "sanctified" by the superimposition of arrows that pierce the body, without thereby communicating a feeling of pain.

- Magdala, 2019. Fotografia digitale, stampa su carta Hahnemuhle. 25 pezzi 25x25 cm. ciascuno. Tiratura 1/10

- Magdala, 2019. Digital photography, print on Hahnemuhle paper. 25 works 25x25 cm. each. Edition 1/10

It is a photographic work born in 2019 as a survey on the use made of the female image in mass media, such as fashion, advertising, television.

In our times, imperfection and "the other" beyond the surface, are not considered except as an instrumental one to appear "otherwise attractive" and in any case generate controversy and consequently always raise a market.

Starting from beauty, I wanted instead to stratify the photographs, duplicating faces, changing bodies, adding elements of urban reality, which humanize the subjects by disturbing them from their immobility, enrich them with emotionality, with an often ambiguous and veiled poetry, always melancholy and restless. The elements are linked to our contemporary aesthetic sense: tattoos, cities, domestic environments, objects, colored hair.

Under the appearance there is a scratch, the body is a battlefield, the faces have become canvases for me, where the viewer must focus, imagine the other, going beyond a wound.

Magdala's archive is made up of over a thousand photographs, to emphasize the aesthetic bulimia of our time.

25 were chosen which will be printed 25cm x 25cm, digital photograph with Hahnemuhle paper edition 1/10, and hung up creating a large picture where you can linger in the best of places, or in the worst. I like the idea that the viewer has to spy on a private detail, almost through a keyhole or the window of the building opposite.

Contamination, inclusion, genderless, are recurring words in my research.

The freedom to show oneself as one is, loudly declaring the consistency of a choice, even if it is ambiguous.

Maybe we can remove source of these painful memories, but the scares or trace will still be there and become a part of yourself.

VALENTINA VIOLO

Biografia

Amore-eros-arte.

Biography

Valentina Violo, born in Milan on March 20th, 1988. She attends the Piccolo Teatro drama school where she begins her acting career. She plays on all the most important stages of Italy, but also on the most unknown. She plays roles in various movies, both Italian and international ones. She also takes part in more hybrid video-art projects. She starts working as a model and collaborating with photographers from a very young age, but, more important, she takes photos of herself. Self-portraits are to her another kind of expression, a suspendend and private time where she plays with her image, a time where she can bringher visions, ghosts, impulses to life. Or sometimes her self-portraits are simply a peep-show in her intimacy. Her inspiration comes from mythology, literature and exoterism. Theatre life, and tour life especially, are most important in her photographic games, they are the starting point. On stage, time is frozen, clocks run differently from the world we live in normally. On tour, life is suspended, it is a gypsy life made of hotel rooms, restaurants, solitude, wine, love, eros, art. Love-eros-art.

She has the night as her role-model.

I chose this title after the orphic fragments I usually read at night, this title (as my collection) belongs to the night. I spent night after night reading the orphic fragments that have survived and arrived to us, trying to make a sense out of them, trying to undersand. This is a compendium of selfportraits, most of them were shot in hotel rooms, and most of the time it was nighttime; the night is my most fertile ground. And when the light is morning light, it is the light of a morning-

after, burdened with night. I use a Lomo instant automat, sometimes I play with double or multiple expositions ; I carve in film moments of me, I bring my obsessive images to life, and it is funny that most of the times they seem to be appearing by mistake. It’s me playing, it’s me with

my intimacy; it’s me trying hard to reach out to literature characters I love but most of all to the sacred gods that belong to me as my very bones. I explore Eros, that is the primigenial force (or imput), that is the engine of the world, and that is the only thing that makes sense in this non-sense, therefore the basis to every exploration.

CHIARA VITELLOZZI

Biografia

Attualmente lavoro e vivo a Milano.

Biography

Class of 1983, I was born in a small seaside town in Tuscany. At the age of 19, I moved to Florence to attend the university of architecture and it’s here that I am fascinated by the relationship with form, by matter drawn by light and details hidden by a blade of black.
I've always seen everything like this: it's either light or dark.
Photography gradually becomes my obsession and my expressive language.
The one who speaks for me when I'm silent.
I start working as an architectural photographer for the University of Florence and for some architectural firms, and then focus on the aspect that I always feel most mine, namely the portrait. So I opened my own studio in Livorno, where I mainly dealed with commissioned portraits, collaborating with the Tuscan region and with other local realities as a tutor and teacher of photography.
At the same time, my research focuses on self-portrait, on the body, on the infinite contradictions. When I photograph myself I don't photograph myself, I photograph what I would like to be and what I still ignore to want.
When I photograph something else, I photograph what I feel, live, think.

I currently work and live in Milan.

Everyone in our life is destined to disappear. It happens gradually or with a clear detachment, which cuts off what was from what will no longer be.

What remains is the memory of a perfume in the folds of our childhood,a disfigured sky under which to walk, a sea that we thought from a window.

It is the expectation of a return, a letter that we had to write, a hand touched by chance, a naked body that has no face, an empty bed.

Two eyes that we could always look at.

Disappearing means canceling oneself to exist only in that border between light and darkness, presence to absence, lived and imagined.

CIRKUS VOGLER

Biografia

Biography

The name Cirkus vogler combines the idea of the circus intended as a set of spectacular anomalies and a place of magic and wonder, not without elements of concern and the recurring surname of the Bergmanian characters in the director's films more open to the dream. Vogler begins his exploration artistic with painting, to continue with photography, first analogue (dark room, forum pinhole, polaroid, cyanotype gum dichromate, salt paper, solarization), subsequently

digital (from high definition to lo fi) to arrive at a personal form of mixed techniques based on collages made with heterogeneous media such as paper, vintage photos, recycled materials photographic and iconographic.

Cirkus Vogler is also dedicated to the creation of musical video clips and short films, mainly experimental and in stop motion. His first paper photozine "To burn with desire" was released in 2020 in a circulation of 150 copies (sold out), another collection entitled "I am a tree" is currently in progress, which will include a selection of nature-themed works. and human, a theme very dear to Cirkus Vogler.

In the search for him different symbols recur: the thread, which from time to time refers both to the bond and to the constraint, the link between beginning and end; the roots, a representation of the connection with the unconscious and of life in evolution and anatomical parts whose image is often torn, as if to recall the concept of primordial wound. A production "fascinated by the esoteric who knows how to grasp unity even where there would seem to be the supreme separation, which knows how to be the unique mystery of the union of opposites and which does not retreat in the face of evil because it knows that it is a necessary side of existence, because he knows that all repression is mutilation. " (Daniele Baron, I is another) Often the starting point in Cirkus Vogler's work is far from the fulcrum of an aesthetic and an accomplished technique but generates, from the lack of error and glitch, a further compositional image canonical and balanced.

Cirkus Vogler was assistant to Bruno Ceccobelli, she participated in several solo and group exhibitions including Marsciano Arte Giovani, "Lunacy" personal at the Villa Urbani Library in Perugia, Spello photo fest, Lunissanti art project Castelsardo, European photography Reggio Emilia, Todimmagina, photographic spring Ostra, personal exhibition at Bookbank Piacenza.

About the Cartaccia/Carta Sacra project.

What differentiates a piece of waste paper from a work of art? At what point do we stop considering it paper and begin to give it artistic dignity?

Cirkus Vogler recovers old magazine clippings, keeps them, puts them together, elaborating them and from them creates new situations. They are photos in black and white that derive from services and advertising, material that would surely have ended up in the separate collection container, but which in Vogler's work comes alive with mystery and elegance.

Beautiful women are transformed into hybrid creatures by mixing with natural elements, such as shells, which represent a symbol of purification and rebirth in religious iconography.

The paper-object that is purified through the intervention of the artist to be reborn in something other than itself, the work of art. Vogler's figures have something of a metaphysical, they are part of mysterious thoughts

and they never reveal themselves fully. They are parts of reality hidden from the distracted gaze, which reveal themselves instead to those who look closely. They are realities out of context, linked by thin threads that keep them from oblivion. And the collage technique allows us to construct presences and absences, to then be fixed in the eternity of the photograph. Blacks and whites without halftones, full of contrasts, where reality blends with the imagination to create something new and unexplored.

Cirkus Vogler begins his artistic exploration with painting, to continue with photography, first analogue (dark room, pinhole, polaroid, cyanotype bichromate gum, salted paper, solarization), then digital (from high definition to lo fi) to arrive at a personal form of mixed techniques based on collages made with heterogeneous media such as paper, vintage photos, photographic and iconographic salvaged materials.

Mi aiutano a scavare, esplorare e ritrovare me stessa.

In these photos, I wanted to create six representations of myself. Each image expresses a concept that is fundamental to me: strengths and weaknesses which, through photographic art, are laid bare to be observed by an eye that retracts. The self-portrait invites us to get out of ourselves. During this process, we become foreigners ourselves, and through this movement, we want to identify by creating a sort of zone of blindness. Here, the opposition between sensible and intelligible overcomes and acts as a bridge between the two sides, allowing a better knowledge of one’s unconscious. These images are characterized by vivid and strong colors to further enhance the subject which, despite being immobile and posing, maintains stability imbued with dynamic force.
